ABOUT THE FACULTY / CLASSES

Heidi Henderson, choreographer for elephant JANE dance, a pick up company in RI, is a three time recipient of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Choreography Fellowship. elephant JANE dance has performed at the South Bank Centre in London, in New York City, at Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out Festival, at The International Festival of Dance in Taegu, Korea, at the Bates Dance Festival, and around New England. Heidi has danced in the companies of Bebe Miller, Nina Wiener, Peter Schmitz, Sondra Loring, and Paula Josa-Jones. Heidi is a contributing editor at Contact Quarterly, a vehicle for moving ideas. Heidi received her BA from Colby College and her MFA from Smith College and is in her ninth year on the faculty at Connecticut College. She has been teaching at the Bates Dance Festival for many years.
CLASS DESCRIPTION: Heidi's class is big moving, fluid flowing, curious, attentive and joyous dancing.

David Dorfman is the Artistic Director of “David Dorfman Dance”, one of the nation’s leading modern dance companies, and the Professor of Dance and Department Chair at Connecticut College. He is the recipient of a 2005 Guggenheim Foundation fellowship for choreography. Dorfman's choreography has been produced in New York City at venues ranging from the BAM Next Wave Festival to The Joyce Theater, The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, The Duke on 42nd Street, Danspace Project/St. Mark's Church, P.S. 122, and Dancing in the Streets. As a performer, he toured internationally with Kei Takei's Moving Earth and Susan Marshall & Co. Dorfman holds an MFA in Dance from Connecticut College. www.daviddorfmandance.org
CLASS DESCRIPTION:Dorfman’s class will focus on technique, repertory, body maintenance and improvisation. Dorfman’s teaching style is dynamic, full of energy, and will include inversions.

Lisa Race is the Artistic Director of Race Dance and has been on the Dance faculty at Connecticut College since 2007. Race has spent most of her career as a performer, teacher and choreographer in New York, where her dances have been seen at venues including Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project, Movement Research at the Judson Church, The Kitchen’s Dance in Progress series, and the Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse. Race was a member of David Dorfman Dance from 1989-2000, for which she received a Bessie (New York Dance and Performance Award) in 1995. Race has taught and choreographed at Trinity College/Performing Arts at La Mama in New York City, Wesleyan University, and festivals around the U.S. as well as creating works on D9 (Seattle), Labco (Pittsburgh), Atrek (St. Louis) and Aaben Dans (Copenhagen). She has given workshops at festivals in Europe, South America and China. Recent performances have included the Construction Co. in NYC, Bates Dance Festival, and Made In France, in Melisey, France. www.racedanceco.com
CLASS DESCRIPTION: Race’s class will draw upon an athletic movement background to develop comfort in utilizing the hands as another weight-bearing source. Dance phrases will highlight the thrill of momentum and gravity as a means to develop full-bodied, risky dancing, challenging the body to defy preconceived notions of what a body can achieve in motion.
